The Re-Discovering of Old Molecules to face the Antibiotic Crisis
2015
Drug-resistant bacteria are responsible for 5,000 deaths a year in the UK, 25,000 deaths a year in Europe and it is estimated that at least two million people in the United States are infected each year and 23,000 of those die from pathogens that are not susceptible to the treatment by any of current antibiotics [13]. Antibiotic resistance of common pathogenic microorganisms is a topic of great concern and it has finally attracted the attention of mass-media and of some global leaders. For example, President Obama, answering the question “Is antibiotic resistance a threat to global security?” has replied ”Effective antibiotics are vital to our national security... They are, quite simply, es…

The closeness of the ties between Huawei and the Chinese Government will decide if the world will end…
Business Cultural Intelligence Quotient: A Five-Country Study
2016
Cultural intelligence (CI) has often been linked to performance at the individual, team, and firm levels as a key factor in international business success. Using a new measure of CI, the business cultural intelligence quotient (BCIQ), our study provides empirical evidence on several key antecedents of CI using data on business professionals across five diverse countries (Austria, Colombia, Greece, Spain, and the United States). The findings suggest that the most important factors leading to cultural intelligence, in order of importance, are the number of countries that business practitioners have lived in for more than six months, their level of education, and the number of languages spoken…
Co-evolutionary coupling leads a way to a novel concept of R&D - Lessons from digitalized bioeconomy
2020
Given the increasing role of research and development (R&D) in competitive markets in the digital economy while confronting the dilemma between R&D expansion and a productivity decline, transformation of the R&D model has become a crucial subject for global digital leaders. The authors of this paper postulate that neo open innovation harnessing the vigor of external innovation resources which then developed into a new concept of R&D that self-transforms during an R&D process initiated by Amazon by coupling with users. The authors further develop these postulates by proposing the embedding of a growth characteristic identical to biological coupling. An empirical analysis focusing on the fore…
